Silaturrahmi dengan Pak Jamil Azzaini

Tanggal 25 Januari yang lalu, bertempat di rumah makan Gur Rame 44, komunitas TDA Mojokerto mengadakan silaturrahmi dengan Pak Jamil Azzaini. Beliau hadir sekitar jam 17.30 bersama rombongan.
Setelah sesi perkenalan, kami langsung mendengarkan sharing pak Jamil tentang pengalamannya membangun bisnis.Berikut poin-poin yang sempat saya catat:
1.Pilih bisnis di bidang yang kita sukai.
2.Gunakan metode Nilai x Skala x Waktu. Makin tinggi besaran tiap variabel makin besar bisnis kita.
3.Kembangkan jejaring bisnis
4.Bergabung dengan kelompok mastermind

Acara dihadiri oleh ketua TDA Mojokerto: mas Andi Firmansyah dan bertindak sebagi sahibul bait mbak Diah Nurhayati.

Cant' browse Google

This problem actually occured some times ago in my Windows XP. I cannot browse certain site like Google, MSN, etc. But strangely for local hosted site like detik.com has no problems. The problem can be solved by entering IP address of the sites into url field. But who will waste brain to memorize such thing?

Searching in google come up with solution around DNS issue, proxy, and such kind. I have tried most of solution suggested with no luck. Until last night when the same problem raise again. This time my searching end up to native firewall embedded in motherboard (DFI LPUt nf3 250 GB) using NVidia chipset. In one forum someone suggest that the optimum configuration is just turn it off!.

I try this idea and google.com back in my computer..:))

Restoring GRUB in Debian Etch

After reinstalling my Windows XP (as usual) I have to restore GRUB which is wiped out during the process.

I take the way using Debian net install CD, typing "rescue" (without quote marks-of course) from the option screen and follow the next steps until selecting what file system partition for the root is.
Then the last thing is to install GRUB. Firstly I choose to install GRUB on "hd0,0" since I only have single disk.

Weird thing happen when I reboot. It won't boot Windows. Debian runs well. I noticed there is some error when system trying to mount Windows partition. Try to manually mount it have no result as well. Also by editing fstab.

Then I decide to restore windows MBR again, by using windows installation CD and choose "R" for repairing existing Windows installation. Next I run "fixboot" followed by "fixmbr".
I repeat the process of restoring GRUB, but this time I choose "dev/hda " or you can type "(hd0)" when asked where to put GRUB. Reboot the computers.

I select Windows to test if this make any difference and yes..! Finally Windows can be booted from GRUB.

Saya mencoba mengikuti link dari Osnews, tentang Paludis - alternatif pengganti Portage di Gentoo. Yang tampil di monitor adalah pemberitahuan bahwa situs tidak mendukung browser selain IE 7 !!!.

Anehnya link yang sama terbuka lancar-lancar saja di rumah (saya pakai Linux).
Apa karena saya menggunakan ntlmaps ya?

Pagi ini ada satu kejadian yg membuat saya merenung.

Putri kami Nana, yang sedang pilek minta dimandikan saya. Ibunya sudah berusaha membujuk tetapi tidak berhasil.
Masalahnya jam berangkat saya sudah mepet. Sebenarnya saya sudah berniat terlambat ngantor asal bisa memenuhi permintaannya. Tetapi istri saya mendesak untuk segera berangkat. Dengan sangat terpaksa saya tetap berangkat setelah berjanji pada Nana kalau besok dia akan mandi dengan saya-dengan catatan harus pagi bangunnya.

Saat dalam perjalanan ke kantor, saya berpikir: harus berapa banyak lagi kejadian seperti ini harus saya alami? Hanya gara-gara masalah klasik: demi pekerjaan.
Rasanya sayang sekali kalau momen2 seperti ini terlewatkan. Tidak tiap hari Nana minta dimandikan ayahnya.

Mungkin ini saatnya untuk menyusun ulang prioritas hidup saya..

Upgrading Ubuntu 7.10

Pagi ini akhirnya saya punya kesempatan untuk mengupgrade Ubuntu 7.04 ke versi terbaru 7.10. Kalau mau sebenarnya saya bisa melakukannya lewat internet. Tapi setelah dicek, untuk itu perlu download file mendekati 700 MB!. Karena kuota bandwith Speedy yang terbatas, maka saya upgrade saja lewat CD, biar hemat:)
Proses upgrade cukup lancar, hanya ada satu error karena mistype di file sources.list yang menyebabkan update manager tidak bisa tersambung ke mirror lokal. Setelah diperbaiki, semuanya mulus.
Saat booting pertama, resolusi monitor yang diset adalah 1024x768-tidak seperti Ubuntu versi sebelumnya yang langsung pas. Saya coba mengubahnya ke 1280x1024 tetapi hasilnya layar tidak penuh. Kelihatannya harus mengoprek xorg.conf nya nih. Kemungkinan refresh ratenya kurang pas.
Jadi hari ini PR nya adalah ngoprek freshly upgrade ubuntu...

Update 24Oct:
Sampai pagi ini meskipun sudah mengobok-obok xorg.conf belum berhasil. Akhirnya saya coba fresh install, tetap belum berhasil juga. Apa ini bugs? Saya pakai kartu grafis ATI Radeon 9250.

Yahoo lebih ramah pada Linux?

Pagi ini saya punya pengalaman menarik.
Ceritanya, setelah menghubungi layanan pelanggan sebuah perusahaan yang menjual permainan interaktif untuk anak-anak, saya dikirimi patch lewat surat elektronik. Setelah bolak-balik mencoba mengunduh lewat window$ gagal, saya coba unduh lewat Debian dan ternyata berhasil...:)
Wah apa ini tandanya linux lebih superior ketimbang window$ ya? Atau kemungkinan lain ada salah satu aplikasi window$ saya yang "menghalangi" proses pengunduhan lampiran?

Instalasi MS fonts di Linux

Gara-gara baca postingan om Ravi soal Metric equivalents of MS fonts di linux, saya jadi ingin menginstal font-font Microsoft.
Buka synaptic, search ms font, klik mark for installation, apply, selesai. Restart browser, coba kunjungi detik.com. Nyata benar bedanya, antara sebelum dan sesudah...:)
Kenapa nggak dari dulu-dulu instal MS fonts?

Flash player di Debian Etch - AMD64 arch.

Setelah pusing mencari-cari di internet caranya install Flash di AMD64, akhirnya ketemu tautan ini.
Dengan sedikit deg-degan karena unofficial saya ikuti semua langkah-langkahnya.
Sedikit kesulitan timbul ketika tidak ditemukan folder plugin di /home/.mozilla/ Saat memindahkan berkas flashplayer.xpt dan libflashplayer.so. Solusinya saya coba buat folder tersebut. Selanjutnya semua lancar. Flash terpasang dengan sukses..:))

Untung ada blog...

Gara-gara terlalu bersemangat menginstall Debian, saya lupa menyalin berkas menu.lst dari GRUBnya Open Solaris.
Walhasil setelah install Debian selesai, Archlinux saya tidak bisa dipanggil karena salah loading imej kernel.
Setelah ngubek-ubek google tanpa hasil, kemudian saya ingat salah satu postingan di blog ini tentang konfigurasi GRUB waktu install Open Solaris dulu.
Setelah membaca dan mengikuti tautan yang ada, akhirnya saya berhasil menghidupkan kembali Archlinux nya..:)

Untung ngeblog hehehe...

New Toy

It sound silly, but it happened to me:)
I decided to install Debian latest stable release since to me the logo is nice and also pak BR who has blog I frequently visit prefer this distro than other.

I take netinstall method. Start with downloading small ISO image from Australian mirror-due my local mirror does not provide AMD 64 architecture.
Most intimidating part is (always) partitioning. This time I create separate /home partition. So in the future I can install any distro without worrying my personal setup & files.
Configuring network also a bit confusing me. It list two device:
-eth0 with Firewire and
-eth1 with nVidia CK8(?) controller.
Since my box only have one NIC, I assume it's always eth0. Then the installer reported it fails to configure the network. I repeat this step, and this time select eth1. Success!
After the base install complete, I was asked to pick a mirror to complete the process. Again I choose Pacific-Australia mirror. My Arch distro also use Pacific mirror, and it fairly fast.
It takes loong time to finish the downloading of 651 files. Around three and a half hour. Thanks it still within my bandwith quota. I choose to install GRUB on MBR to replace deleted GRUB from Open Solaris. The install process going very smooth. Even no additional input from my side for the rest of it.
At the end of installation I reboot and greeted with gdm, where I type my username and password created during installation step.
Then I was presented with blue screen with big Debian logo with some icons on the left. Debian default desktop is GNOME.

Next post installation task are:
-Edited fstab to mount another partition: Arch and a FAT data disk. I still can't write on data disk. Guess because permission issue.
-Make sure multimedia player worked well: MP3 & encrypted DVD. It is.
-Trying hotplug devices: this also worked well.
-Installing Flash (downloaded from Adobe): won't install because no 64 bit version.
-Trying famous apt-get to install media player Audacious: complete.

Overall installing Debian Etch4.0 is fun. Everything is smooth, even xorg detected my screen resolution correctly. Anyway I still need more time to explore this distro and get familiar with it.
To me Arch is like Ferari with the latest and greatest technology on it and of course quite speedy, while Debian more like Rolls Royce where not as fast as Ferrari but very elegant and has different class:))

Adiknya Nana

Banyak peristiwa penting terjadi, semenjak posting terakhir (16 Desember?:)). Mungkin yang paling penting adalah kelahiran putri kedua kami, yang kami panggil DANI.
Dani lahir secara normal tanggal 3 April 2007, di Lumajang (seperti tempat kelahiran kakaknya), dengan berat 3650 gram dan panjang 49 cm.
Saat ini Nana, Dani dan ibunya masih di Lumajang, menunggu saat yang tepat kembali ke Mojokerto. Jadi saya saat ini statusnya bujang lokal:)

Mohon doa restu kawan kawan semua agar Dani tumbuh jadi putri shalihah. Aamin..

Rock Phish

Rock Phish adalah sebuah organisasi(?) yang diklaim menjadi otak dari 50% serangan phising di internet, seperti yang diberitakan disini. Hebatnya kelompok ini , selalu berusaha inovatif dalam menemukan cara-cara baru untuk melakukan aksinya. Sampai saat ini pihak-pihak yang berkepentingan belum berhasil menghentikan kelompok ini. Satu tantangan lagi buat para pakar sekuritas nih.

Upgrading Archlinux

Few days ago I decided to upgrade my Archlinux OS. This is first time I issue the pacman Syu command. Since it is already some time from fresh install, the required file is big enough: around 371 MB.

After completing the process, I restart the machine and struck with kernel panic message. It says that the system cannot mount root directory to the unknown device.
Googling for awhile, I pointed myself to get some info on mkinitcpio section of Archlinux wiki. The wiki told me that I have to edit my GRUB menu. Apparently it fails to load the correct image, i.e /boot/kernel26.img or /boot/kernel26-fallback.img.

I did not realize that I have to edit my Solaris GRUB, not Arch, since the machine uses Solaris GRUB which is directly load the required image of Arch kernel.

So everything goes find, but the Xorg server. It froze when I run startx.
Quick search on Xorg.0.log shows that my ATI driver does not support my chipset series: Radeon 9250. So I reconfigure again the Xorg, and be able to login into graphical environment.

Last thing to tweak is the screen resolution: max resolution only 1024x768, while my SyncMaster 793 can handle 1280x1024 at 65Hz. From online modeline generator, I found that the horizontal refresh rate has to be corrected as per my monitor specs. 30-70kHz.

Finally I can enjoy my newly upgraded Archlinux...:))

OpenDNS

Sudah pernah dengar OpenDNS?
OpenDNS adalah layanan DNS gratisan lebih aman, cepat dan cerdas dibandingkan server DNS lain (dalam hal ini saya menggunakan DNSnya telkom?)-begitu kata situsnya:)
Informasi layanan ini pertama kali saya ketahui dari postingannya William.
Sedikit cerita saat mengganti setting ke OpenDNS: setelah mengedit /etc/resolv.conf dengan IP server OpenDNS, komputer saya langsung terdeteksi menggunakan layanan ini. Tetapi jika komputernya direboot, DNS server yang lama kembali dipakai. Setelah saya cek, ternyata file resolv.conf nya ditimpa oleh program dhcpclient saya.
Menurut instruksi di situs OpenDNS, agar settingan dns yang baru permanen, saya harus mengedit file /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf dan mengubah IP server lama. Celakanya saya tidak bisa menemukan file yang sejenis untuk di Solaris Nevada saya:). Maklum newbie.
Akhirnya saya bertanya langsung ke OpenDNS dan dijawab dengan cukup gamblang.
Ada 2 cara untuk mengubah setting dhcp:
1. Yang diubah adalah setting dhcp server (ADSL router), keuntungannya semua mesin yang terhubung dengannya otomatis menggunakan OpenDNS, atau 2.Mengubah settingan mesin satu persatu. Karena alasan diatas, saya mencoba mengganti setting router saya.

Alhamdulillah sukses. Jadi sekarang OS apapun yang saya gunakan otomatis menggunakan OpenDNS.

Saat berkendara menuju tempat kerja kemarin pagi, saya mendengarkan radio favorit saya. Seperti biasa pagi itu ada talkshow, kali ini temanya laporan sebuah LSM internasional: Transparansi Internasional (kalau tidak salah). Menurut laporan mereka Indonesia ada di peringkat 134, sedang Jakarta ada di peringkat pertama kota terkorup di Indonesia.

Yang menarik adalah komentar salah satu petinggi kota Jakarta. Katanya (kira-kira): "Wajar kalau Jakarta ada di peringkat pertama. Kan 70% kegiatan ekonomi Indonesia ada di Jakarta". Langsung saya berpikir: Kenapa bukan New York atau London yang ada di papan atas daftar korupsi ya? Saya yakin kedua kota tersebut berkontribusi jauh lebih besar dibanding Jakarta. Bahkan untuk perekonomian dunia!.

Tidak bisakah kita dengan besar hati mengakui kalau kita memang masih harus banyak berbenah di segala hal?

SX:CR CPU usage

I just realized that my CPU usage is significantly high, even when the system is idle. I notice the figure never below 30%.
Worst case happen when I accessing blogspot.com site, the usage is 100%!! This make the response is terribly slow.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Open Solaris snv49

I read an old entry in Ben Rockwoods' blog, said that if you already installed Solaris 10 GA, it is highly recommended to upgrade to Solaris Express Community Release (SXCR). Since then I was tempted to get my hands on this kind of Solaris

Finally last week I have the chance to taste it.
I downloaded all the 6 ISO file from Sun server,after registration. Then with my friend help, I burnt tem into CD. Thanks Dem.:)

Install routines almost like the old cousins. There also a bug? Since I chose to install Java Enterprise, at the end of the process I was asked to insert the CD contains this application. But the installer cannot find on the 6 CDs. Maybe I have to download them separately? Don't know. So like what I 've done in Solaris 10, I skipped the Java Enterprise and get ready to fine tuning my fresh installation.

First boot was not so impressive. Besides the time it takes, my box also experience kernel panic. Twice. Then I boot to failsafe mode. It was succesfull. Then rebooted the system to get login screen. This time there is no kernel panic.

Next step is to setup my onboard ethernet using Masa's nfo driver. Having some experience from Solaris 10, I go straight away to run install script. But since I forgot to create hostname.nfo0 file so the driver did not attached. Creating this file fixed up my problem instantly.

In my opinion this svn49 are more smart than the old cousin. Sound, mouse scroll button worked out of the box.
The application also more recent and complete. I have Firefox 1.5.0.6, Real Player 10, Rythmbox, GIMP, etc.
User interface also get improved. An example: I can switch among workspace by scrolling the mouse button over the workspace icon. Something I did not get from Solaris 10.
But I miss shutdown button – even when login as root. Maybe this is a step to secure the system? Nevermind. I found that I can shutdown the system by issuing poweroff command as root.

So the remaining task is to set up Blastwave package management and enabling watching DVD movie. I will do this later.

Restoring GRUB of my Linux partition

I know, this is maybe sound silly. But I always install a linux distro GRUB on MBR. Since usually I had more than one linux distro on my disc, after the installation process I have to edit the /boot/GRUB/menu.lst file by handand added parameter so GRUB can boot into each distros
I stuck to a problem when installing Solaris 10. Solaris boot manager – not GRUB since my version was released somewhere in 2005- cannot boot into my linux partition. I tried to search a kind of file menu.lst in Solaris partition but could not find one.

Then from a blog of Sun’s employee I knew that the solution is to install linux GRUB to it’s partition. And hopefully Solaris bootloader do the rest.

I get the installation CD of Archlinux, and boot the computer from CD. Select the option of installing bootloader, but this time I chose on /dev/hda1 where Archlinux resides.

I then reboot the computer. I choose my linux distro when Solaris boot manager asking what OS I want to boot into. Archlinux GRUB appears instantly and since there is no other option, it boots to Archlinux. Success

Now I have two kind of OS in my computer: Linux & Solaris. I wish to install more but my disc only 20 GB, which is effectively restrict me from installing other OS

Configuring NIC in Solaris 10

As previously mentioned, solaris did not recognize my onboard NIC. My motherboard is DFI LanParty UT nForce3 250 GB. The LAN chips manufacturer is Marvell 88E111 PHY. An internet site said what I need is a SKGE driver. I have no luck with this driver. The message said that driver success added to system, but failed to attach. Maybe since the driver could not find the hardware. Strange enough, because the same driver work well with same hardware. Later I knew that what important is the controller, which in this case is nForce3 250 GB chipset. The driver should attached to this controller.

Then I download drivers from Masa Murayama site. It is nfo driver .Unfortunately, I am unable to get it installed. The error messages is “ don't know hw to make 'install”.
I tried to bypass the make install step and proceed with the next step of installation, by launching install script. No result. But I can see from the message that the driver also work for nVidia NIC df. That's my ethernet id!!.

Googling again, with different keywords, I found myself reading a long threading on Sun's forum. Exactly explaining how to install the Masa' Murayama drivers. I found out the problem cause by gcc and make file path was not correct. So I added the path and restart the steps.

Finally the nfo driver successfully installed, and I just configure my dhcp setting to get online.

Installing Solaris 10

Almost two weeks now my computers running Sun’s Solaris 10. I don’t know the version. But it says SunOs 5.10. Actually I have the CD’s since last year. But due to hardware issue, I abandoned the OS until recently. My interest.. comes again after reading an article saying that Google’s trying this OS. Why not give it a chance…?

First try was not silk smooth. Partly because I didn’t know how to share swap memory between Linux and Solaris. Some documentation explained that both can share the swap, while official documentation from Sun explicitly told that Solaris must have it’s own swap. Also I allocated not much space for Solaris.

Previously I have 20 GB disc with 3 linux partitions, hosted Arch linux, Ubuntu 6.04 and Slackware 10.2. Later I have to merge the last two partitions to provide more space to Solaris. I decided to keep Arch because it is located on first partition and also due to it simplicity, speed, and lightweightness. But still when I finished editing the partitions, I can’t boot into my remaining linux partition .

To shorten the story, finally I can install Solaris to my computer. I have to repeat some stages since the steps a bit different from installing linux. Then I boot first time into my fresh Solaris.

It takes longer than my Arch linux or Slackware to get into graphical login. The first window manager I encountered is CDE. I am playing a bit until suddenly the display resolution become terrible. Looking at the docs, I launch kdmconfig to fix the problem. It brings me to the installation of Xorg (sound familiar). Upon complete the process, I reboot and choose the JDS environment. Tadaa…what a nice desktop there. Yes it is GNOME based.

But the system is crippled because I have no internet, sound and mouse scroll button didn’t work. Quite strange because the mouse works well during the installation. A quick workaround on file /etc/X11/xorg.conf fixed this issue. I changed the mouse protocol to “ImPS/2” and added line Option “ZAxisMapping” “4 5 6 7” on mouse section.

Googling the net, I came up with solution for getting sound on. It says I have to add audio810 "pci10de,ea" on /etc/driver_aliases. At that time I don’t know the reason why I have to put pci10de,ea. Later I know that this is the device-id of NVidia sound controller :). And here I use driver for Intel’s i810 audio controller since there is no specific driver from NVidia available.

So the remaining biggest issues is internet connection. I will tell the story on another posting since this one is really interesting…or frustrating?

Note: I was really helped by SLAX, a nice linux live CD based on Slackware during the process of installing Solaris. Thank you very much Tomas….:)

Akhirnya punya blog juga nih:) Mudah-mudahan tidak malas diupdate. Sebetulnya sudah lama ingin punya blog. Selama ini lebih senang mengunjungi blognya para selebriti blog indonesia. Ternyata banyak informasi yang bisa diakses lewat media blog. Apalagi komentarnya ! Makanya saya sangsi kalau ada pakar yang berpendapat bahwa "blog cuma trend sesaat". Jadi, happy blogging....
